Chapter 7

Carla watched as the credits of one of her favorite movies scrolled up the large plasma screen. Of course, the skill of Halle Berry and Jessica Lange’s performance in Losing Isaiah only made the movie’s poignant message more forceful.

Not that she had any intentions of giving her child, her son, away.

Her son.

She smiled, a warmth stirring deep in her heart. Already, she felt a profound love for the child growing inside her. Again, she wondered who the child would look most like.

Shayne?

Her?

Of course, she wouldn’t know for another few months, but it really didn’t matter. Either way, she’d have a beautiful son.

Someone to love.

Carla pressed the volume button on the remote control to lower the sound of the television. Now that the movie was over, maybe she’d get some sleep. Her body felt tired and she needed the rest. She’d tossed and turned for hours, bombarded by the words of the doctor. She couldn’t lose her son, but even this state of sleeplessness could be aggravating the problem.

She stood, moving toward the window, but changed her mind, going back to the bed. She needed to sleep. She flicked the television off, pulled the covers over her and closed her eyes.

Thirty minutes later, Carla opened her eyes. Sleep was nowhere near touching her eyelids.

She climbed out of bed again and headed for the window seat. Maybe a few minutes of the cool night breeze would lull her to sleep.

She took a few cautious steps, her eyes adjusting to the darkness.

Suddenly, Carla found herself flying through the air, her feet off the ground. She screamed as she stretched her hands out, trying to break the fall. When she landed, however, she felt her hands twist under her and she felt a sharp pain flash through her head.

For what seemed like hours, she lay there, her breathing broken and ragged. She moved her hand from its awkward position beneath her body. It hurt a bit, but it did not appear broken. She wiggled her legs and they too seemed unbroken.

About to attempt to stand, she heard a knock at her door.

“Carla, is everything all right? I heard a scream.” It was Shayne. She knew he’d come.

She tried to answer, but she could make no sound.

Before she knew it, the door flew open and Shayne entered, the light from the hallway created a dull aura around him.

He moved quickly to where she lay, bending to draw closer to her.

His hands probed her body, gently. “What happened?” he asked.

“I don’t know. One minute I was headed to the window and the next thing I know, I’m on the ground.”

He reached beneath her, lifting her in his arms with ease and laid her on the bed with the utmost care.

“You don’t seem to have broken anything. Is it hurting anywhere? Your head? Arms?”

“No, I’ll be fine. My hands broke the fall so I’m fine. I just feel a bit sore and battered. My head hurts a little.”

“I’ll go downstairs and get a glass of water and some pain medicine for the headache.
